Popoyo

After our trip to Puerto Cabezas, three of us rented a truck and headed down the coast toward Costa Rica to the little village of Las Salinas, the location of Playa Popoyo.  We were blessed to have the use of a home owned by a local Carlsbad developer which was about a mile from the beach.  It was a great adventure and of course the "San Diegans" wanted to surf Popoyo.

Photos Up

I've posted the photos I took of the Nicaragua 2012 trip to Puerto Cabezas.  I will put a link below.  It was a task, post producing the images and getting them in some order.  I used up a number of SD cards so they all had to be edited, posted in files and separated from video I shot, as well.
It was fun editing because the memories are still vivid;  it brought smiles and some sadness, as well.   It is a poor country but the spirit of the people was vibrant.  Travel is a wonderful experience because in the diversity of the culture you find that the people have the same wants, wishes and desires you have.

Like the fish, we may be from various places in the "sea" but we are all one:  created by the Creator in His image.

If you would like to see some of the images from the trip:  http://www.pbase.com/photobyjdp/nicaragua_2012

I will post some videos when I have them edited.

Nicaragua 2012

Eight members of the North Coast Calvary Chapel (NCCC) in Carlsbad, CA went back to Nicaragua in the 3rd week of February to work with the Verbo Ministries in Puerto Cabezas.  The task was to begin construction of a church in the village of Betania, which is about 17 miles (and a bone-jarring ride) out into the  Región Autónoma del Atlántico Norte.  Our group raised about $5000 to buy concrete and concrete block for the beginning of the wall.  For three days we laid approximately 1500 blocks; other will come behind us to continue working on the project.  One day, there will be a village church!
(This is a photo of what we completed in 3 days!)

Some of the children we met in the village of Betania.

We had a great time and I will post more photos and stories of our trip.

Shutting Off the Computer

Shutting down the computer, as I grab my bags to head to LA for my flight to Nicaragua... this pretty guy called out every morning while I was there last year to remind the camp that it was time to rise.

I will have my Ipad with me so hopefully I can up load some images to FB or my Flickr account:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/studio1-one/

I've polished up on my Spanish, checked the equipment, hid the money in the money belt, grabbed the passport (still has a couple years left on it), so I'm ready to roll.

Hopefully the bird buddy will still be there!

Surf's Up

I know, you get bored looking at surf photos, but hey, it has been warm and beautiful in SoCal and when the waves build, it is time to hone the skill of capturing surfers doing their thing.

This guy was really putting on a show... there wasn't a wave that he didn't try to capture.  I thought I would do a sequence on him:  he's off the top of the wave on the left then he starts grabbing the board on the final image as he crashes into the landing.
This guy was really working the waves and you could sense when he was going to make a sudden turn with a rooster tail at the end.  So the effort is worth the wait.
This guy was having fun trying to stay on the board through the crashing wave:  the water temperature is a chilly (or cold) 57 degrees.
I usually post my surf pics at:  http://photos.surfline.com/view_gallery.php?aid=1309&sort=date&days=all    where the guys/gals can see themselves.

Doggy Modeling

Well, not quite, but since Mickey, who is about 20 months walks each day with me, if I need a subject, he's there!

For some reason, I was having problems with my D7000... when I returned from Indiana, I noticed that several of my images were corrupted.  Thinking that I may have a card issue, I bought two new 16g SD cards from San Disk.  When I photographed the Carlsbad Marathon, I had several corrupted images, along with most of my video clips.  So, I knew that it wasn't the cards, but the camera???

According to a Nikon forum, the problem might be that the software of the camera wasn't updated, so I did that immediately, then needed to try out the camera because I need it for my trip to Nicaragua coming in late February.  So who was available... Mickey!

It looks like the card is working ok... so maybe the update solved the problem.  The moral of the story is that when your camera manufacture has an update, you probably should do it... :(

Carlsbad Marathon

It's that time of year here in SoCal for the Carlsbad Marathon.  It seems weird to have a race in January, but the weather usually holds for the event.  Yesterday, it rained all day, put today... it was nice, but a bit cool.  There is a place I like to go for my photos... in the area of the 17 mile so that I have the ocean as a backdrop.

So around 7:30 the first runner comes into view with the usual fanfare of honks, motorcycles, etc.  But out there it was lonely... no one cheering in sight!  But there he was... smoke'n down the road on to a first place finish!  Congrats Mario.

Here are a few samples of the race photos.

I'm sure they are all happy it's over... resting those sore muscles and looking back on their accomplishments.
